Hotspot: the dirt you dig. Mattock: this skill's pick. Restore: fix the piece at a bench. Damaged in the bank is not a level.
Unlock
Do the tutorial site. Use a mattock of your tier. Collectors and qualifications open later sites.

Inventory
Wear the archaeology outfit if you own it. Use the best mattock you can hold. Bring materials for the restore. Bring only what this method uses. Leave the spare gear in the bank.
Money fork
Restored artefacts and materials can pay. Level 120 is time at a hotspot. Check the material price.
Iron fork
If you cannot buy the supplies, gather them yourself. Stay on the earlier step until you have them.
Kit
Wear the archaeology outfit if you own it. Use the best mattock you can hold. Bring materials for the restore.
Mistakes
Do not bank damaged artefacts and never restore them. Do not dig with a mattock two tiers too low.
Stop
Stop when you have the level you came for. A quest, a prayer, or a weapon. Level 99 is a cape. You do not need it to use the skill.
Official notes
XP rates move. Use the live wiki for the number. This page is the route.
